WHITE WATER RAFTING AND KAYAKING
‘The Whataroa is often described as ‘New Zealand’s Grand Canyon’ as the river moves through three towering granite gorges and runs along the biggest glacial ice-field in the country. You’ll feel the vastness of the Southern Alps and the power of nature that has created this amazing landscape.
Being of the finest one-day whitewater experiences you’ll find anywhere, this is a must do for anyone. Nestled under the highest snow capped peaks in New Zealand, guides and kayakers from all over the world love this river because of the pristine wilderness scenery that is so spectacular and the rapids are so enjoyable! The west coast is renowned for the quality of the water for not only the rapids but the amazing see-through turquoise waters. The Whataroa is a stunning example of this typical West Coast scenery and what you’d expect to see on a postcard.
While there are no off-road routes for cyclists as yet, the Whataroa Valley flats offer 25kms of quiet rural roads which access picnic spots beside the rivers and spectacular views. Bikes, helmets and high-vis jackets can be hired at the Information Office opposite the Garage. A map of the Valley routes is available. Ask about picnic lunches at the Store.
A community steering committee is being formed to asses an extension of the West Coast Wilderness Trail is viable from Ross to Franz Josef in the future. Stay tuned.
