Library

The library is housed in the Whataroa School and is open to all residents.
The opening times are Tuesday from 3:30pm to 4:30pm and Saturday from 10:30am to 11:30am.
It is run by an informal committee and is manned at opening times by a willing group of volunteers.
We are always looking for more people to put on the roster. It’s an easy opportunity to put something back into the community.
The Library houses a good selection of books belonging to the Library and also a loan collection of 100 books.
Books are exchanged every eight weeks with the Hokitika District Library.

Post and Freight

The White Heron Store is the Postal Agency.
Township residents use post boxes located at the store.
Rural residents use the Rural Delivery service.
Application forms for both services are available inside the store.

Whataroa is served by NZ Couriers, Grey Valley Couriers, Aratuna Freighters, among others.
The telephone directory lists a number of other companies under ‘Transport’.
Parcels are delivered to and collected from the freight box beside the White Heron Store.

Rubbish and Recycling

There are two options locally. There are drop-off bins for small quantities opposite the White Heron Store.
Please note these are small bins only.

There is also a drop-off depot at Ralph’s Knob, on the left of State Highway 6, south of Whataroa, before the Waitangi Bridge.
The depot is open on Wednesdays from 1:30pm to 2:30pm, Fridays from 1:30pm to 3:00pm and Sundays from 1:30pm to 2:30pm.
Note these days may change after October 31.

South Westland Rubbish Removal collects to order and runs an impressive recycling operation from Franz Josef.

Telephones

Whataroa is included in the Hokitika calling area. The prefix (03) is required only if phoning north of Hokitika, and Franz Josef southwards. Cellphone coverage is OK in town, and variable throughout the region. Services are being improved all the time.
