Whataroa (The Long Storehouse)
There is so much to discover about Whataroa. On the northern reaches, the iconic Whataroa River valley, pictured above, hosts whitewater rafting, horse-riding treks and glacier flights. To the south, the Waitangi River and Lake Wahapo are perfect for fishing and kayaking.
The alps to the east are renowned to trampers and for hunting wild chamois, tahr and deer. And flowing westward, the Waitangi-Toana River takes you to the unique Kotuku\White Heron Sanctuary, the only known breeding colony in New Zealand.
Whataroa’s scenic nine hole golf course and adjacent tennis courts are situated at the domain on the northern entrance to the town. They are available at any time for visitors and the community. Try Twilight golf while it’s light till late during daylight saving.
If cycling is your thing, the 20 kilometers of flat road around Whataroa are ideal for family cycling with magnificent rural views in every direction.
For beach-goers, Okarito beach is great for picnics, beach-combing and walking. In summer, there is usually a satellite lagoon on the beach that offers safe swimming for children.
